Q. My husband is a Creole from southern Louisiana and he loves his collard greens. I, on the other hand, find that they upset my stomach. Is there anything I can do in preparing my greens so that they will be less aggravating to my tummy? I would sure love to be able to enjoy this favorite dish from his childhood. Plus, it might earn me some points with my mother-in-law! Thank you!
--- Elaine P., St. Martinville, Louisiana
A. Thank you for your question, Elaine. About 15 minutes before the greens have finished cooking, add a teaspoon of sugar. This will help remove some of the gas in the greens which may be upsetting your stomach. Best of luck!
Q. My 12-year-old granddaughter keeps asking me to get her a cell phone for her birthday. Her mother, my daughter, seems to think that's a fine idea, but I have my doubts about the need for a 12-year-old girl with a cell phone. I wondered what your thoughts might be on this topic. Respectfully,
--- Rosa S. -- Detroit, Michigan
A. Rosa, I agree with you regarding a 12-year-old girl and a cell phone, however, to keep peace in the family, give your granddaughter a gift card. Then it becomes a decision between her and her parents as to what she will purchase. Results: happy granddaughter, happy daughter, happy grandmother!
